Taiwan fire leaves 46 dead, dozens hurt

Update 4:31 a.m. EDT Oct. 14: Officials in Kaohsiung said 46 people are dead and at least 41 others are recovering from injuries after a fire broke out in a 13-story building early Thursday, The Associated Press is reporting.

Original report: At least 25 people are dead and dozens are recovering from injuries after a fire ripped through a building in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, authorities said.

According to The Associated Press, the incident occurred about 3 a.m. Thursday in a 13-story building that includes residences and businesses. Firefighters said the “extremely fierce” blaze, which was strongest in a cluttered area, engulfed several floors of the 40-year-old structure, the news agency reported.

Crews transported 11 bodies directly to the morgue, and 14 victims who were taken to a nearby hospital had “no signs of life,” the AP reported. Another 41 people were being treated for injuries, authorities said.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the blaze. Rescue efforts remained underway Thursday afternoon, according to the AP.
