ROCKFORD, Ill. — One person was killed and two people were seriously injured Tuesday when a building exploded in Rockford, authorities said.

It’s unclear what caused the fire, the Rockford Register Star reported. In addition to the building that was destroyed, a neighboring residence also caught fire, the newspaper reported.

When first responders arrived on the scene at 6:40 p.m., two people were laying outside the building, WTVO reported. Debris landed across the street and damaged several vehicles, the Register Star reported.

Gasoline lines were cut off to surrounding homes as a precaution, the television station reported.

Fire crews are investigating, WIFR reported.
