LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. — Health officials in an Arizona county are asking visitors to avoid a beach in Lake Havasu City after mosquitoes tested positive for the West Nile virus.
In a news release, officials with the Mohave County Department of Public Health said that mosquito surveillance by the agency’s Environmental Health Division verified that the insects tested positive in the area of Body Beach on the eastern shore of Lake Havasu.
The lake, which straddles the Arizona-Nevada border, is a popular venue for tourists.
Health officials said the department routinely conducts mosquito surveillance throughout the county. Culex species mosquitoes, which have the potential for carrying West Nile virus, are identified and tested, KTNV reported.
In its release, Mohave County health officials said visitors to the area can reduce the risk of becoming exposed to the West Nile virus by using insect repellent and wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants to prevent mosquito bites.
