They’ve seen something that few have seen and have sent back amazing images. Now the crew of the Artemis II has returned to Earth.
Update 9:12 p.m., April 10: The crew of the Artemis II splashed down at 8:07 p.m. ET in the Pacific Ocean near Friday.

The capsule landed in the ocean upright or “Stable one” commander Reid Wiseman told mission control, according to The New York Times.
The astronauts’ families were in mission control waiting for word that it was a successful landing, The Associated Press reported.
Mission Contol ‘s Rob Navias said it was “a perfect bull’s-eye splashdown.”
They were also “green” meaning they were in good health.
The mission lasted nine days, one hour, 32 minutes and 15 seconds, or as NASA said 10 days. It was going 24,661 at its fastest, just short of the record set by Apollo 10, which went 24,791 miles per hour in 1969, the Times said.
Before they made it back to Earth, the crew was traveling at Mach 33 or 33 times the speed of sound, the AP said.
Original report: They went the farthest into space humans have ever gone, surpassing Apollo 13’s record and reaching 248,655 miles from home, NASA said.
The mission completed by NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, along with the Canadian Space Agency’s Jeremy Hansen, is, as The New York Times reported, the next step to returning a person to the moon after more than 50 years.
Preparations have already begun, as the crew has stowed their gear and prepared their spacecraft for reentry into Earth’s atmosphere.
The crew, according to Space.com, had some tests and practice for what was called “off-normal scenarios.” They also got into compression clothing, also known as orthostatic intolerant garments, to help adjust to being stuck in gravity and counteract dizziness and lightheadedness.
On the ground, or rather, the sea, the Navy has sent the U.S.S. John P. Murtha to pick up the four spacemen.
The ship was already en route to the zone on Wednesday, the Times reported.
The cameras strapped to the outside of the spacecraft have checked for any abnormalities or damage that could affect the return to Earth, but the Integrity is said to be fine for its high-heat and high-pressure return, the Times reported.
Their trip has become a beacon of hope for those watching from hundreds of thousands of miles away. They shared amazing photos that can now become digital device wallpapers, Forbes reported, and a playlist of each morning’s wakeup music has been loaded into Spotify thanks to Space.com.
The Artemis II is expected to splash down off the coast of San Diego at about 8:07 p.m on Friday, 10 days after it launched on April 1, Space.com.

From the crew’s perspective, the Moon appears large enough to completely block the Sun, creating nearly 54 minutes of totality and extending the view far beyond what is possible from Earth. Solar Eclipse Emergence from Orion Captured from the Orion spacecraft near the end of the Artemis II lunar flyby on April 6, this image shows the Sun beginning to peek out from behind the Moon as the eclipse transitions out of totality. Only a portion of the Moon is visible in frame, its curved edge revealing a bright sliver of sunlight returning after nearly an hour of darkness.
In final moments of the eclipse observed by the crew, the reemerging light creates a sharp contrast against the Moon’s silhouette and reveals lunar topography not usually visible along the lunar limb.

Keeper of the Night Sky Just over half of the Moon fills the left half of the image. The near side, characterized by the dark patches of ancient lava, is visible on the top third of the lunar disk. Orientale basin, a round crater in the center with a black patch of ancient lava in the center, is wrapped in rings of mountains. The round black spot northeast of Orientale is Grimaldi crater, and Aristarchus crater is the bright white dot in the midst of a dark grey lava flow at the top of the image. (NASA)

Ready for a Close Up Captured by the Artemis II crew, the heavily cratered terrain of the eastern edge of the South Pole-Aitken basin is seen with the shadowed terminator – the boundary between lunar day and night – at the top of the image. Shadows at the Edge of Lunar Day The Artemis II crew captures a portion of the Moon coming into view along the terminator – the boundary between lunar day and night – where low-angle sunlight casts long, dramatic shadows across the surface. This grazing light accentuates the Moon’s rugged topography, revealing craters, ridges, and basin structures in striking detail. Features along the terminator such as Jule Crater, Birkhoff Crater, Stebbins Crater, and surrounding highlands stand out. From this perspective, the interplay of light and shadow highlights the complexity of the lunar surface in ways not visible under full illumination. A Moment with the Moon In this view of the Moon, taken by the Artemis II crew at 2:19 p.m. EDT, just before the crew began their observation period, Orientale basin is visible in the center, with a black patch of ancient lava in the center that punched through the Moon’s crust in an eruption billions of years ago. This 600-mile-wide impact crater lies along the transition between the near and far sides and is sometimes partly visible from Earth. It’s All in the Details During their lunar flyby observation period, the Artemis II crew captured this image at 3:41 p.m. EDT, showing the rings of the Orientale basin, one of the Moon’s youngest and best-preserved large impact craters. These concentric rings offer scientists a rare window into how massive impacts shape planetary surfaces, helping refine models of crater formation and the Moon’s geologic history. At the 10 o’clock position of the Orientale basin, the two smaller craters – which the Artemis II crew has suggested be named Integrity and Carroll – are visible. These features highlight how crew observations can directly support surface feature identification and real-time science. (NASA)
