Boy, 11, among 3 killed in Oregon ‘hostage situation’; suspect identified, police say

SALEM, Ore. — An 11-year-old boy was among three fatalities in a Salem hostage situation Monday afternoon, Oregon State Police confirmed.

The suspect in the standoff has been identified by the Marion County Sheriff’s office as Jose Jesus Lopez-Tinoco, 34, of Woodburn, KPTV reported.

According to KOIN, deputies arrived at around 12:30 p.m. and found Lopez-Tinoco armed and holding people against their will. Although a trained hostage negotiator made contact, gunshots were fired from inside the residence, and deputies attempted a rescue.

Deputies found the bodies of Lopez-Tinoco, an unidentified 11-year-old boy and 24-year-old Diari Bustos-Bustos inside the home. Lopez-Tinoco appeared to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the TV station reported.

Deputies also discovered an unidentified 13-year-old boy who was uninjured and Laura Rocio-Bustos, 43, who had been shot and is currently hospitalized with serious injuries.

Oregon State Police confirmed one deputy fired “a yet to be determined number of rounds” during the forced-entry rescue, and deputy Ricky Kittelson has been placed on administrative leave per department protocol, KPTV reported.
